Individual Therapy

Many people have a preconceived notion of what therapy is.
Many imagine sitting on a huge leather couch with a strict psychologist in front of them asking them various questions writing away on a notepad. This may have been the scenario many years, probably decades earlier. The couch part still exists, however, today, psychotherapy is innovative and encompasses several forms and approaches to provide therapy to a client.

Life has many challenges that require us to figure out how to cope as best as we can. Sometimes, those challenges become overwhelming and we need to seek out extra support. Individual therapy is the process where a person seeks out extra help to learn coping skills and to understand more about oneself. Individual therapy offers a safe and non-judgmental environment where you can express and explore your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviors. During therapy, you learn to identify areas of your life, which you might like to make changes and develop self-control skills, self-confidence, introspection, and other skills that may help you to achieve your goals

Having a disability can be even more challenging in addition to the general demands of life. In therapy, I will help you learn more about your disability, regulate certain negative behaviors, and provide you with the tools to help you understand yourself better and learn how to cope with some of the challenges we inevitably experience in life. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but by building on your strengths and developing ways to compensate for the weaknesses, you can be successful in all areas of life.

Individual therapy can take on many forms and delivered in diverse ways. It is essential to understand your issue in detail and only then the approach to resolving the your problem can be decided.

In the therapy process, we will be using many approaches including:
Identify life coping strategies – I will teach you to understand yourself and the specific coping strategies that can help you change and growth. I will help you in personalizing the strategies to the current situation to ensure its resolution and management. We will also work together to develop new strategies for the future issues which may arise.
Priority management – Many times, people try to manage many things at once and start expecting too much from themselves which causes stress (see stress management page on the impact of stress). While some things may be practical, others may not be. In such situations, it is vital to be practical and to rearrange the priorities in your life. Doing this will lower your stress and allow you to minimize anxiety and depression in your life.

Know your strengths – In many crisis situations, especially when they are psychological, you may give too much focus on your weaknesses. You may be focusing only on what you don’t have or can’t do, while you should be focusing on your personal strengths (yes you have loads of those).

I will help you become aware of and draw on your strengths and incorporate those strengths in your life. Being positive and focusing on your strengths can lead you towards a better and more enriched life.
