Family Therapy

Do you have too many arguments with family members?

Is your home environment being affected by disagreements with your child?

Are you unable to talk it out with your teenager?

Often, families’ deal with problems on their own, but sometimes families start to fall apart and need some guidance. Whether you are dealing with school difficulties with adolescents, a family member with learning disabilities, ADHD, or autism, or just a general breakdown in the family structure, the whole family will need support. I offer family and parent trainings that will provide you with information on how to support someone with a disability, what resources are available, how to advocate for your rights, and how to emotionally cope with the extra stress. It can be especially difficult for parents with multiple children. Parenting skills are taught specifically to help you cope with a child with a disability, and how to include other members of the family.

Any conflict in a family setting which refuses to die down needs to be addressed. Conflict or disagreements happening for a day or two are reasonable and even advisable to strengthen the family relationships, but any dispute/conflict which is ongoing and tumultuous can have a negative impact on the family, and it is essential to get help and seek family therapy.

Managing family conflicts can be done in many ways. Supporting individual family members is possible with one-on-one therapy sessions, or group sessions. Each family and each situation are different, so a personalized plan and strategy would be created for you at your first consultation.
In a family, there are so many different aspects and people involved. Taking the time to hear each family member, understanding their views and opinions, and allowing them to face their conflicts constructively are vital. Structuring the conflicts and enabling everyone in the family to manage it well is a goal in family therapy. There are so many inter-relationships to understand and cope with. Each family member has a different relationship with another which continuously fluctuates. It is imperative to note that unique situations like marriage, divorce, family conflict and death can be challenging times for anyone to deal with. In situations like this, it is important to bond together and support each family member. Doing this would allow the entire family to be in harmony and bond together in a wholesome way.

The goal of family therapy is to improve the way family members interact with one another by creating healthy boundaries and fostering greater acceptance and often independence. Treatment focuses on refining communication between family members and, most importantly, developing strategies to better cope with the challenges that lay ahead.
