Psychoeducational Assessment

Psychoeducational Testing

Are you or your child struggling in school, and you don’t know why?

The only way to get a full picture of what is happening is to have an evaluation. If this is your first experience, you’ll need to know some basic information on what evaluations are, the process of obtaining an evaluation, and what they provide:

What are they?

Psychoeducational testing (also referred to as assessments or evaluations) refers to the psychological tests used to analyze the mental processes underlying you or your child’s performance that affect educational success. These tests assess your Cognitive functioning (visual spatial thinking, short-term memory, long-term memory, attention, etc..), Academic functioning (reading, writing, math, etc..), and Developmental functioning (communication, behavior, social interaction, motor, and sensory abilities, etc..). The tests are used to diagnose Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and/or Autism/Asperger’s Disorders and to determine appropriate accommodations/interventions in school or at work.

The Process?

You will initially speak to the clinician and review the process. An extensive intake will be taken to assess prior functioning. The evaluation takes about 8-10 hours to administer: which would be broken into 4-5 sessions, 2 hours each session. Clinicians may request to speak to teachers as well. After the assessment is complete, the clinician will score and write the report. The entire process generally takes a month to complete but can take longer depending on how long it takes to complete the sessions.

The Results?

A thorough comprehensive report will be given to you at the end of the assessment. This report may be used to receive accommodations and services at school or work, or to gain a better perspective of your individual strengths and weaknesses.
Interventions and recommendations for continued support will be provided. These recommendations may be used to apply for accommodations in school (k-12 and college), for standardized testing (SAT, ACT, PSAT, AP Exams, Licensing exams and etc), and in the workplace. Results may be also used to request reimbursement from the board of education for specialized educational schools.

The Cost?

Generally, these evaluations can run up to 5k, however, I work on a sliding scale fee to support families that struggle with those fees. It is based on your annual household income as seen on your last tax return. Payment plans may be arranged as well.

If you feel like you need extra support in school, do not wait to get an evaluation. It can truly make a difference to your academic success.
